Metabolic Typing |
||||
Nutrition of the Future IThe term biochemical individuality was coined by the late Dr. Roger Williams to indicate that the variations of our metabolic biochemistry are infinite. This implies that different nutrients and different quantities of nutrients are required for each of us. Yet there are brilliant nutritionists advocating one type of diet for everyone: Dean Ornish recommends a low protein, low fat, high carbohydrate diet; Barry Sears recommends the Zone Diet of 40% carbohydrates, 30% proteins and 30% fats; and Robert Atkins recommends a high protein, moderate fat and low carbohydrate diet. If it is true that our metabolic chemistry has infinite variations, then there can be no one diet that is appropriate for everyone. One person’s food might be another person’s poison. There certainly are some foods that are bad for everyone. But there are also good foods that are good for you, and good foods that are bad for you. This is determined by your metabolic type. Over the last fifty years, scientific research has identified the Oxidative and Autonomic Metabolic Systems. Oxidation is defined as the speed at which food is converted into energy by the tissues of the body. Autonomic is defined as neuro-endocrine control of the metabolic processes. Metabolism is defined as the sum total of all electrical and chemical reactions that take place in a cell or organism. The Oxidative System is sub-divided into Fast Oxidizers (acid blood) and Slow Oxidizers (alkaline blood). The Autonomic System is sub-divided into Sympathetic (acid blood) and Parasympathetic (alkaline blood) types. Unless we are already balanced, each one of us can be typed as dominant in one of these four profiles. Venous blood pH is considered ideal at 7.46, because that is the pH at which nutrients can be assimilated and utilized optimally. When you know your metabolic type, foods and supplements for your particular profile should bring you near the ideal pH. Being able to utilize macro and micro-nutrients optimally will convey a heightened degree of wellness. Energy will often be greatly enhanced, allergies may disappear, and various disease processes may be reversed. Addressing the individual’s metabolic type promotes a much more reliable success rate than more conventional nutritional approaches, and it is destined to be recognized and adopted as the nutrition of the future.
